| Description | In 1884, a requiem was heard in the basilica in Staré Brno during the funeral mass for Abbot J. G. Mendel, conducted by the former founder of the monastery, the thirty-year-old Leoš Janáček. The requiem was composed by Janáček's teacher, composer Pavel Křížkovský, whose musical talent was once recognized and sent to study by teacher Jiří Janáček, father of Leoš Janáček. Mendel was elected abbot after the death of Cyrill Nappa, who led the Brno monastery to its peak. F. M. Klácel - a poet and philosopher who, together with A. Rambousk and T. E. Šilinger, strove to establish a newspaper written in Czech and took part in the political events of the revolutionary year 1848 - also gave his voice to Mendel before he left for America. In addition, he entrusted Mendel with the care of the monastery garden , in which the famous experiments with peas and hawksbills were carried out. Although Mendel and Janáček wrote their names into world history, their work was also shaped by the work, thinking and work of now unjustly forgotten Augustinian brothers - journalists, musicians, literary theorists, poets. A lecture will be devoted to their thinking and work. |
