Description In contemporary academic geography critical interpretive approaches prevail over earlier quantitative-analytical or traditional approaches. Secondary school geography education, on the other hand, is still rooted mainly in traditional approaches. This has major implications for the ideas about the world that school leavers acquire, as well as for the interest in studying geography at university. The paper identifies the sources of the problem in the development of geographical thought, and using the examples of the understanding of space and region, suggests ways to weaken the division between academic and school geography.
