Description | Honey (Mel) is produced mainly by the honey bee (Apis mellifera, Apidae), by converting nectar and honeydew from plants. Depending on the type of honey plants, unifloral and multifloral honey is obtained, which have a characteristic color, smell and taste. The identification of honeys is currently most often carried out using a melisopalynological examination, this method is also useful for historical samples. Historical findings testify to the beekeping already in prehistoric and ancient times, and pollen grain findings from this period are also known. Honey has been known since ancient times mainly as a sweetener, but since the period of ancient Egypt it has been also used as a cosmetic and became part of medicinal products. Trade in honey, beeswax and candles developed in the monasteries (from around the 13th century). Honey (Mel) and purified honey (Mel depuratum/despuratum) are already mentioned in the oldest recipes, manuals and pharmacopoeias; in pharmacy it was used as a medicine or a vehicle. |
