Citation
Description A paper devoted to the travelling and natural history activities and responses to the work of the German artist and entomologist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1711), who is considered the first female scientific traveller. She published a number of scientific publications with her own illustrations, among them the Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (Changes of Surinamese Insects), which was based on her extraordinary journey to Dutch Guiana (now Suriname), which she undertook at her own expense and with her daughter only, without a male companion or sponsor. Her work as a researcher and illustrator was appreciated by her scientific and artistic peers, but later she was rather forgotten, but today her importance is again strongly acknowledged.
