Description | Communication in oncology represents a key element of successful patient care. While the basic principles of effective communication are well-known to most healthcare professionals and applied daily, there is a deeper layer of communication that often escapes our awareness. This lecture will focus on an introspective view of communication, where the main goal is not only the transmission of information but also understanding the hidden needs and motives that shape our interactions with patients and each other. Our ability for empathetic listening and humanity is often mentioned, yet occasionally we encounter situations where, despite all our knowledge, misunderstandings and conflicts arise that can lead to complaints or lawsuits. This lecture will address why, despite apparent readiness and expertise in communication, errors and misunderstandings still occur. We will explore what unconscious motives and personal needs might influence our conversations and decisions, and how these invisible factors can affect the quality of patient care. The approach presented encourages participants to reflect on their own communication patterns and offers strategies for improving personal and professional development in communication. The goal is to enhance the abilities of healthcare personnel not only in perceiving and interpreting patient communication but also in deepening self-reflection and self-awareness, which are essential for effective and compassionate communication in the challenging environment of oncology. |
