Description | Language teachers in the Higher Education settings are often asked to teach not only language skills that will enable their learners to communicate competently in their disciplines and various academic situations, but also a whole range of extra-linguistic communication skills their learners are expected to excel at as well. The extreme situation of the last two years have brought the need to find new ways to teach in general, however, language teachers have witnessed yet another shift. Apart from the interest in innovative pedagogies and methodologies focusing on ICT use and higher individualisation of learning, language education has clearly shifted from the traditional language acquisition to social communication situations, which has been promoted especially by the new CEFR Companion (2018). This complex situation can be, for some language teachers, more than challenging. In this talk, from the perspectives of a teacher, teacher trainer and internationally active academic, I will argue LAP/LSP teachers can become effective providers of both an excellent language and extra-linguistic communication skills support to university students and academics. I will offer a practice-oriented insight into approaches that can allow for flexible implementation of a wide range of extra-linguistic competencies next to the linguistic ones into LAP/LSP courses. I will explore the relationship between language learning and communication skills and discuss appropriateness of individual teaching styles for specific situations that can enhance or indeed restrain the effectiveness of language learning. Finally, I will address strategies that can help learners deal effectively with diverse communicative challenges in their future professional lives. |
