Description | This paper examines the life and works of prominent Brno composer Osvald Chlubna in the second half of the 1930’s. Since we discussed the following years more precisely in a study Works of Osvald Chlubna during the Second World War in Opus musicum revue in 2019 and at a conference in Terezín the same year (Osvald Chlubna and Vladimír Helfert), this paper attempts to broaden the biographical and musicological research deeper into the years of one of Chlubna’s peaks of musical activity in the relatively free Czechoslovakia. The main points are: 1. Chlubna’s musical works – namely his first piano cycles (Nocturnes, op. 36, Prelude, Toccata and Fugue, op. 37, Three Preludes, op. 42), three concertos (for viola, op. 44, piano, op. 46 and cello, op. 47), symphony From Hillsides, Mountains and Forests, op. 40, Passacaglia, op. 41 for organ, Wind Quintet, op. 45, Choruses, op. 39, Songs of Life, op. 38 and scenic mystery How Death Came to the World, op. 43. 2. His teaching career at Brno Conservatory, his memberships in the Club of Moravian Composers and other associations and awards for his works. 3. Performing and reception of his works in the press in the examined years. |
