Description | The chapter addresses climate modeling from the perspective of the economic post-growth narrative. Climate scenarios and associated climate models play a significant role in climate policy negotiations at national and global levels and include natural science and socio-economic components. The chapter explores the assumptions that these models work with in the socio-economic part. The authors point out that despite the urgent need to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions towards carbon neutrality, all existing IPCC scenarios assume continued economic growth, ignoring the possibility (or necessity) of a fundamental transformation of our socio-economic system. The chapter proposes that it is crucial to abandon the dogma of economic growth and systematically develop scenarios that focus on the quality of life for all people on the planet while minimizing the risks associated with exceeding the planet’s biophysical and environmental limits. |
