Description | This paper, which is part of reflections on the ‘geographical tendency’ (Gouveia e Sousa) in Teresa Veiga's work, focuses on the narrative O Senhor d'Além (2021), whose location in the Algarve region not only serves as a setting for the story, but also has a strong genius loci and myth-making power. The reflection will be guided by the concept of topophilia (Yi-Fu Tuan), developed in contemporary times in harmony with the interest in geographical and ecological themes in literary studies, and by the concept of topophrenia (Robert T. Tally Jr.), which corresponds to the subjective perception of places in a spectrum of sensations, emotions and sometimes ambiguous feelings, at the centre of perplexity, astonishment or strangeness.Whenever appropriate, this ‘topo-reading’ of O Senhor d'Além will be accompanied by very brief references to Portuguese authors, with whom Veiga's work seems to (in)consciously dialogue. |
