Description | The Cathedral of St. Vitus in Prague, Notre-Dame in Paris, the Votive Church in Vienna or another majestic church in one of the European capitals are for most of us the embodiment of the true Middle Ages. Few people know that in fact they are often 19th-century architecture or buildings that have been substantially rebuilt in that period. The appearance of these monuments is the result of romantic idealisations, nationalist disputes and 19th century economic interests rather than a testament to the pre-modern past. This book shows that our 'real Middle Ages' have little in common with the original, but they tell us much about European culture of the last two centuries. |
