Description | The article deals with the re-evaluation of some established literary stamps in Chekhov's work on the example of the writer's early stories. Chekhov, using the literary images, techniques, plot moves, word combinations and phrases that were repeated in his time, gives them a parodic reinterpretation. Based on the analysis of the story ‘Words, Words, Words’, the authors come to the conclusion that the situation underlying the work turns into a kind of performance, a game, as the characters perceive each other through the prism of the novel canon. The template behaviour of the characters exposes their true intentions. ‘Literary’ begins to enter the real life of people. The game created by words does not change anything in essence, words begin to be perceived as a mask, as an excuse to play ‘fallen creature’ and ‘saviour’. The authors also consider the parody of the romantic style on the example of the work ‘One Thousand One Passion, or Terrible Night’. Chekhov plays with romantic moves that had become stamps by the time of the writer: excessive scrupulousness of narration, interweaving of plot lines, interconnection of nature and the hero's inner state. The use of detail helps Chekhov not only to create an image already familiar from previous literature, but also to destroy it. Chekhov invariably diminishes and reduces what is meant to express the sphere of a high state of mind, be it a portrait characteristic or an artistic detail. The authors conclude that Chekhov parodically reinterprets the literary stamps (plot, image, detail, portrait, theme, etc.) that had become monotonously repeated in the literature of Chekhov's time. Thus, Chekhov does not refuse to use the stamps of previous literature, but creatively overcomes them with the help of detail, play, use of dissonance, which allows him to express his assessment of the state of the literary situation contemporary to him. |
