Description Maslow’s Theory of Motivation may be effective for working with individuals with substance use disorder (SUD). This research examines changes in needs satisfaction and SUD symptoms before and after incarceration and aims to create an approach to working with people with SUD in prison. Using interviews, preliminary findings suggest unmet basic needs often lead to substance use, while in prison, alternative coping mechanisms like emotional numbness emerge. Abstinence in prison is linked to the need of self-actualization, a need rarely mentioned before incarceration. These findings will be tested quantitatively and developed into practical recommendations for working with prisoners using Maslow's theory.
