Description The use of proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane of various types of cells can be under the control of at least three so-called "uncoupling proteins" (UCPs). On the basis of structure homology, UCPs are placed into the family of mitochondrial ion carriers. The role of UCPs is to modulate a degree of coupling of mitochondrial synthesis of ATP with the transport of electrons along the respiratory chain.
