Description | The main idea is the application of fundamental notion of human thinking, the notion of function, for explication (formalization) of (general) structure of musical compositions. There are two aims here: 1) optimal analyses of compositions, 2) the theory of constructing of compositions. The model of musical composition on the functional basis is of three levels: 1) the "elements" are tones, intervals, rhythms, timbres which 2) are ordered into "sequences", i.e., functions from numbers (time-points) to elements of a given type; this means that melody is a function (the musicological statement that melody is a set is inadequate), 3) there are also functions upon previous functions (we call them "Functions") which transform melody into another melody; they made us varying of music possible (this is the real job of artificial composers). Such a general theory should transcend particular musical theories and any other mathematical grasping of music. The computer-aided composition (analogously: analyses of compositions) do have to use the functional approach. Without functions, the composing (or analyzing) of music by a computer is still in the certain beginning. |
