Description The aim of this work was to identify cytoskeleton and to reveal the ultrastructure in two human fungal pathogens, Cryptococcus neoformans and Aureobasidium pullulans. While C. neoformans revealed rich actin and microtubular cytoskeleton similar to ascomycetous budding and fission yeasts, respectively, A. pullulans was deficient in actin cables, but had rich microtubules. Ultrastructure in both organisms was typical for eukaryotes, rich in ribosomes and plasma membrane invaginations. In C. neoformans actin cables were detected by freeze-substitution. Cytoskeleton may be essential for vectorial manner of secretion of hydrolytic enzymes during invasive growth of pathogen in a host organism.
