Description Effects of a high bromide intake on the kinetics of iodide uptake and elimination by the thyroid and skin of adult rats were studied. The observed coordinated transfer of absorbed iodide from the gastrointestinal tract through skin to thyroid could represent an important step in the iodine metabolism in the rat. The high rate and extent of iodide accumulation in the skin can significantly diminish losses of ingested iodine. We found that this process could be largely impaired by excess bromide.
