Description | The authors investigated a group of 46 children and adolescents with mild to mederate asthma bronchiale to estimate the physical fitness of children with asthma and postexerese bronchospasm. Maximal progresive exercise test on bicycle ergometer was used to measure physical fitness and to induce airway narrowing. Mean maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max/kg) was not significantly defferent from predicted normal values. Decresed physical fitness was estimated only in asthmatic children with obesity and decreased level of physical activity. There was no correlation between the VO2max/kg and the percentage decrease in FEV 1 and clinical importance of disease. Our study supports the theory that the poorer degree of fitness is due to the development of a more sedentary life-style. Regular physical exereise should be actively encouraged in children with asthma as part of therapy and developing a healthy life style. |
