Description The basic premise of citizens' participation in the decision making regarding their health and health care requires a comprehensive, accurate and timely information on health services performance and quality. The public disclosure of information on quality has arisen an interest in many countries as a strategy to facilitate public accountability of health providers, to support consumers' choice of health services and to promote quality improvement. The US experience and evidence based on the releasing data for more than a decade suggests that despite the expectations the impact on the decision making of the consumers has been relatively small, partly due to the fact, that information has been focused on what was readily available and perceived to be important by the medical professionals. Further research is necessary to find out what information citizens are expecting, consider to be comprehensible and useful for their decision making in the framework of our health care system.
