| Description | In the 1970s and 1980s, singles were labeled as people living in long-term unmarried co-habitation, not to mention those realising other more open forms of living. In todays context, new forms of living (for example, living together apart), as well as the mass increase in unmarried cohabitation, bring up the question of basic definition criteria. Foreign literature offers many varied alternative typologies for independently living persons, according to various criteria: existence or non-existence of a relationship, and its degree of openness; subdivision based on whether the situation is voluntary or involuntary, and temporary or stable. Does determining definitional limits depends on setting certain criteria for the degree of openness or freedom of the relationship, or is it about an unequivocal definition of singles as those not forming a relationship for a long time? A further definitional problem is the motivation and reasons for the absence of a partner. In the Czech Republic, specifically, the key question for research remains, the extent to which being single constitute a planned life strategy for these actors and the degree to which it is an unintentional chance situation, or an improvised reaction to the rapidly changing social context in the Czech Republic (including EU accession), and simply waiting for the right moment for a traditional relationship and family. |
