Description | This paper considers the context of the functional literacy of the child and attempts to find an answer to the question of the extent to which the cultural climate in the family influences the children literacy rate. Data from the international project, International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) are used. This project only measured parents literacy, not that of children. In order to assess children reading literacy, it was necessary to use a substitute indicator, that of the frequency with which a child reads at home during free time. The assumption here is that a high frequency of reading also leads to a high level of reading literacy. Not only was the Czech situation analysed, but also that of Finland and Hungary, for the purpose of comparison. The results indicate that the characteristics of the cultural climate in the family do not overly impact children reading in the Czech Republic. |
