Description The category "femine" is a universal linguistic category. In Russian and Czech this category is marked on nouns that areused in naming individuals through the word-formation process. Russian does not derive feminine forms from masculina nouns but uses nouns as universal forms, i. e. the same noun indicates individuals of both genders. The derivation of feminine forms from masculine animate masculine nouns is much more widespread in Czech than it is in Russian and has remained a productive process in historical perspective. The large number of neologism in contemporary Russian (especially in coloquial speech) using suffixes to indicate the feminine shows that the derivation of feminine forms from masculine nouns is becoming a productive process in Russian.
