Description | The purpose of this paper is to describe the current state and the main development activities of the project of shared Metropolitan Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) operated by Masaryk Univerzity in Brno, Czech Republic. From its beginning the system was designed to serve as reliable and accessible services opened for any hospital or other healthcare institution interested in participating. The main areas to be covered are primary acquisition of current image studies produced by various medical modalities (i.e. x-ray, ultrasound, mammography, etc.),fast accesible long-term archive, communication between radiologist (second opinion, image description by specialist from distant hospital, etc.). The medical image studies from this archive can now be accessed as anonymised studies and so used for education and research purposes. This project has started collaboration among hospitals in the area of processing of medical multimedia data. Masaryk University is the main co-ordinator of this project dealing with demands from radiology departments, changing legislative standards and technology limitations in practise. Masaryk University in cooperation with CESNET association also provides the necessary network infrastructure. |
