| Description | Lamotrigine has newly been induced for prophylaxis of bipolar affective disorders type 1, but its antimanic and antidepressant effects in acute affective episodes were nor distinguishable from placebo. The nechanism of action of lamotrigine is based on inhibition of glutamate release into synaptic clefts and on inhibition of cellular calcium influx. Some lamotrigine risk is the development of rare, rather serious forms of skin rash and interactions with other antiepiletics. Other infrewuent undesirable effects weare not clinically significant.In contrast to other mood-stabilizers, lamotrigine causes neither weight gain nor increase of plasmatic levels of lipids and insulin. |
