Description In the present article I ask a question about a new historical self-consciousness of the film medium, which emerged after the introduction of standardized synchronous sound in the late 1920s and early 1930s and about corresponding processes happening in another mass media of the time. My hypothesis is that this shift was a part of immense growth of visibility of media "materiality" in period culture and of "historization", i.e. the growth of consciousness about the distance between present state and earlier phases of media development that stimulated construction of the first "memory place" (in Pierre Nora s sense) in media history: thegreat silent art of lights and shadows.
