Description Probiotics are live microorgansisms of human origin which favourable influence the human health state. Patients with liver cirrhosis are threatened with bacterial overgrowth, risk of bacterial translocation followed by systemic infection due to disturbance of physiological function of gastrointestinal tract and motility. Administration of probiotics should lead to restoration of natural balance of luminal microbial flora, improvement of imunology function and therefore to lower risk of bacterial translocation and prevent the fatal complications of liver cirrhosis as a bleeding and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. General significance of bacterial flora and its favourable influence by probiotics in patients with liver cirrhossis is discussed in this article.
