Description | This article was primarily intended for foreign Bohemists comments on the common model of the stratification of the Czech national language. It points out that the model is not as simple as it might seem. The position of the extremities of the model (the standard language on one hand and the dialect on the other) is indisputable. The problem is the integration of other varieties of the language, both structural and non-structural, especially the substandard language and potentially also the everyday speech, and also understanding of the boundary between the standard language and what is called colloquial Czech. Moreover commonly used terms do not always correspond with the same concepts and there is not general consensus on the definition of the spheres of the communication for which the particular form is considered dominant. Currently used artificial model of stratification of the Czech national language is (as all models)only a theory of the way the language really works, and in the actual situations. |
