Description | The aim of this paper is to report the preliminary results of Allens fossa. The bone material studied consists of 300 femurs coming from Moravian archaeological researches (16th to 19th centuries), of 250 ones coming from Egypt (662 to 332 B.C.) and 12 femurs in the fresh state. Seventy radiographs of pelvic joints have been examined. A study of pressure and tensile properties using a model of the proximal part of the femur after the simulation of Allens fossa has been elaborated. Preliminary results of our study showed that Allens fossa in adults occurred in 18.1% of Czech skeletal material. They also proved that the Allens fossa incidence in Egyptian skeletal material was comparable (16.3%). Our observations do not support the hypothesis according to which Allens fossa is caused by direct pressure of adjacent structures on the joint and bone. We tend to believe that it is caused by deficient vascular supply of femoral neck and head. |
