| Description | Hell in Buddhism, particularly in its northern – Tibetan and Mongolian variety, belongs to popular topics of narration, written texts as well as visual portrayals. Rather than of hells we should speak of purgatories, which are numerous, complex and structured. Similar to purgatory, wrongdoers leave for another realm after doing their term in hell. Then they are reborn in one of the six worldly realms. The article is devoted to the role of Buddhist monks in various hells; it is based on text of Sutra of the Remembrance of the True Law (Saddharma-smrti-upasthána-sútra) and the Mongolian text by Bandida Tsevel Wangchug Dorje entitled Teaching, which with help of pictures demonstrates why beings are born to live in hell or the world of wandering spirits, and, by filling humans with fear, gudes them to the right path. The text is accompanied with many xylographic images of the scenes of torture, suffering and other horrors awaiting wrongdoers after death. |
