Description Representations of human body are used in a great number of religious rituals in Japan. Dolls and human shaped figures called hitogata or ningyo serve as a medium of communication with kami (divinities), demons or spirits of the family dead. They are often used as human substitutes in purification rites as well. A doll is an item dwelling in a liminality between the world of people and the other worlds.
