Description In this article we consider the development of the children's self-concept and possibilities of its measurement. We focused on the Susan Harter's developmental conception and her self-concept scales: The pictorial scale of perceived competence and social acceptance for young children, Self-perception profile for children, Self-perception profile for adolescents and their parallel rating forms for teachers. We used these methods in bachelor and diploma papers, as well as in the research of intellectually gifted children. The use of pictorial scale seems relatively reliable, as well as the Teacher's rating scale of child's behavior. On the other hand the reliability of the Self-perception profile for children appears questionable. Before next use we recommend a modification of some items and further verification of the reliability. We emphasize administration of this scale in school children older then eight years or in third graders. Currently we modify these methods and we prepare piloting survey for verification of usage these modifications. We would like to use these scales in next research focused on the gifted children with dyslexia.
