Description Molecular biological methods based on species-specific PCR, and amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) of PCR amplicons using 6 restriction enzymes were used to the identification and characterization of new Bifidobacterium strains isolated from the stool samples of suckling babies. Identification of strains of human origin was succesfull in 80% of strains. Bifidobacteria were identified into 6 species with prevalence of B. longum, B. catenulatum/B. pseudocatenulatum, B. bifidum, B.animalis/B.lactis, B.breve and B. adolescentis. Altogether 20% of new isolated strains could not be identified sofar due to the cross reactions or no amplicons detetection. Occurence of unknown species of Bifidobacteria can be considered.
