Description SNRIs are compared with the most frequently prescribed antidepressants, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). In the treatment of depressive disorder, SNRIs compared to SSRIs more often induce remission, are more effective in severe depression and, as suggested by some studies, have a more rapid onset ofaction. AD of both groups are equally tolerated. Other indications for use of SNRIs are as follows: pharmacoresistance control, anwiety disorders, pain syndromes including depressive disordes associated pain and depression control in somatic diseases. Another dual action antidepressant mirtazapine, a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant (NaSSA), is briefly presented, NaSSA generally showing the same advantages over SSRIs as reported for SNRIs.
