Description | The general model of Czech language introduced and developed by Czech linguistics during the 20th century is stratified as well as arranged in a hierarchy. The space between standard language and dialects is filled with a language variety that is neither dialect, nor standard (spisovný) language; this applies to the colloquial form of standard language as well. This variety is referred to as an interdialect in various descriptions of language. There are actually several interdialects; their description is nevertheless difficult. With the exception of Common Czech, which is fairly levelled out, it is possible to observe interdialectal tendencies only, because this is a variety constantly changing to fulfil the needs of a successful communication from both referential and pragmatic viewpoints. However, to be fully levelled out is not suitable for another important function of language, as a means defining and linking a group of communicants. That is why regional features (including those belonging to dialects) are still used, not only in private communication, but in a stylized form also in some texts of public character. |
