Description Polyphenolic compounds are known for a wide range of their biological effects. The aim of our work was to prepare extracts from two kinds of grape byproducts and to determine influence of them and of polyphenol - gallic acid on the levels of cholesterol and leptin on the model of hypercholesterolemia in rats. The red extract (Andre and Blauer Portugaiser), white extract (Pinot gris) and gallic acid were administered intragastrically at the doses of 0.5; 5; or 50 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalents)/kg/day for 40 days and were fed with hypercholesterolemic diet (1.5%). Control group (fed with standard diet) and hypercholesterolemic control group (hypercholesterolemic diet) were treated with water. Levels of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and leptin were evaluated. Our results show compared to control group the total cholesterol level increase in all groups besides of the group treated with red extract at the dose of 50 mg (p<0.01). This elevation was probably caused by elevation of LDL cholesterol levels which were increased in all groups compared to control group. HDL cholesterol levels were elevated against both control groups only in groups treated with 0.5 or 5 mg of red extract. Concentrations of leptin were significantly higher than in both control groups only in the group with the highest dose of red extract treatment (50 mg). Red extract shows hypocholesterolemic effect and decreases in the levels of leptin after the dose of 50 mg GAE/kg/day.
