| Description | The last decades have been marked by increasing integration of European states at various levels, with economic and political integration being at the forefront. This process, however, is accompanied by linguistic integration as well. The effect of English on various national languages has been well-documented, mainly reflecting its role as a 'lingua franca', i.e., a universal code for international communication in both European and global contexts. Less known, however, is a specific form of linguistic integration within the European Union, arising from the need to implement the provisions of various EC directives and orders into national legislation. As a result, the national legislation of EU member states shows correspondences as regards not only the contents (i.e., the actual legal norms) but also the language (i.e., similar formulations and wordings). At the same time, however, there are cases when the source text of the original European directive (usually formulated in English and less often in French) undergoes such a linguistic transformation in the course of its implementation into the national legislation that the resulting translated document contains, despite the original intentions, significant differences. |
