Description Metallothionein (MT) is able to bind heavy metal ions via its thiol (SH) groups originating from cysteine residues. Thanks to them MT is also able to scavenge free radicals. But the metallothionein role in gametes is still unclear. It can be supposed that metallothionein as tranporter of essential metals plays an important role in the sperm maturation, because this process is dependent on zinc distribution in germinal epithelium. Such experiment have been carried out on mammalian models, but in fishes these studies have not been suggested. Thus, the main aim of this work was to detect MT levels in sperm of fishes to evaluate their function in this type of cells.
