Description Using an anonymous questionnaire, a characteristic sample of 9993 responders from 9 faculties of Masaryk University in Brno was addressed. The questionnaire was composed of 21 items aimed at students own lifelong experiences with alcohol, tobacco, cafe noir and other substances, at taking them during the last 6 months and 30 days, at their attitude to drugs, and basic socioeconomic indicators. The answers were electronically recorded and statistically compiled. It emerged that three quarters of responders have their own lifelong experience with tobacco, 99 % with alcohol, 85 % with cafe noir, 60 % with marihuana, 25 % with hashish, 13 % with hallucinogens, 8 % with deadening pills, 10 % with dance drugs, 38 % have an experience with gaming maschines. As far as the other controlled substances are concerned (including so called hard stuff), their lifelong prevalence did not exceed 5 %. More frequent consumption was monitored especially in the case of marihuana, some hallucinogens and deading pills. The responders can quite easily obtain some substances, even at Masaryk University, where activities of dealers were noticed. The most often reasons of drug experimentation are curiosity, urge for inducing of extraordinary and pleasant feelings, a demand of intentional stimulation or slump, improving of mental conditions, a demand of sociability. A greatly tolerant attitude of university students to some of the danger activities, such as relaxing and regular consumption of marihuana and experiments with another so called soft drugs, is striking. It is imperative to consider the discrepancy between the knowledge of addictive drugs and the attitude to their consumption as warning. A half of responders would agree with the legalisation of particular types of drugs for medical proposes, a quarter of them would agree with the general legalisation of soft drugs. Students of Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Economics bring theirselves to admit the problems connected with so called soft drugs less than other students do. Also the availability of these drugs is effortless. Students of Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Education are more careful and cautious, which proves the importance of health and prevention education in pre- and postgradual teaching.
