Description In our study, we focused on biological aspects of the applicability of modern titanium alloys in dental medicine. Overall 34 new titanium alloys with different amount of niobium (Nb), molybdenium (Mo), tantalum (Ta), vanadium (Va) and iron (Fe) were tested using evaluation of mechanical properties and biological approaches. Their suitability for possible use in dental implants was evaluated with a special respect to potential toxicity. To evaluate biocompatibility of alloys, we applied numerous biological tests focused on cell growth, cell adherence, cell dilatation, evaluation of toxicity, test of chromosomal aberrance and other parameters of biocompatibility. The resultes revealed that due to elution of particles of intermetalic TiFe phase and consequent release of Fe ions TiAlFe allyos were not suitable for dental implants. TiAlNb and TiTa alloys exhibited required biocompatibility parameters, even if proportion 35 % (Nb), 25 % (Ta). Among tested titanium materials, therefore, TiAlNb and TiTa alloys were found most suitable for future dental application. Biological test of TiAlV alloys resulted in slightly negative parameters. The TiAlV alloys were, however, still ranked as biotolerant. It might be concluded that TiMo alloys were acceptable for the production of dental implants but less suitable than TiAlNb and TiTa alloys. The research reported in this paper was carried out within the framework of the Stomatological Research Center of the Masaryk University, Brno. The study was supported by the project No. 1M0528 "Centre for dental and craniofacial research" provided by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Physical Training of the Czech Republic and funding POKROK MPO ČR 14-PK/4.
