Description | The publication demonstrates and assesses on selected examples from aristocratic and burgher collections relevant specimens of art collecting and art patronage in Bohemia and Moravia in the years 1650-1939, which is a period that brought in the implementation of new conceptions in art collecting, and consequently also gradual flourishing of art collections. At the same time it determines their typology and elucidates the impulses which motivated art lovers and patrons to similar collecting and patronage activities. Attention is also paid to the socio-cultural prerequisites for the establishment of collection complexes, the mechanisms of their creation, as well as particular forms of art trade, and last but not least the role, which private collectors and their collections played at the establishment and the development of public museums and galleries since the end of 19th century. |
