Description Deportations of Italian Carbonari into Špilberk prison proceeded from 1822 to 1826. Owing to their poor medical conditions, the prison administration had to solve considerable problems of providing them an indispensable medical care. The utilisation of the prison hospital was restricted by the order to isolate political convicts strictly from the others. Ill prisoners were taken care of by a physician, a reputable expert chosen by the Moravian Silesian Guberium, who held surgeries three times a week. He was strictly forbidden to discuss other topics than their diseases with ill Carbonari, he examined them directly in dungeons, he prescribed medicines, and recommended various measures, if necessary. The work of the physician was made more difficult by bad living conditions of prisoners and an absence of ancillary medical staff. The prison physician worked under continuous pressure and his decisions did not have to be respected because of financial as well as political reasons.
