| Description | A unique figure in the history of Buryat Buddhism of the 20th century was Bidia Dandarovich Dandaron, who brought a brand new feature into the tradition of Buryat Buddhism and this happened in a completely new historical situation. For the study of continuity and discontinuity of religious life in Buryatia, it is most appropriate to describe and understand his life, influence, and the role he played in the process of preserving, spreading, and developing Buddhist teaching in Buryatia. Dandaron ensured the continuity of the spread of dharma around new conditions and with new people. He was the first Buryat teacher of Buddhism to accept lay European pupils coming to Buryatia. He did not do this in isolation, on his own, but he cooperated with important Buryat Buddhist monks, in particular from Ivolginsk and later Aginskoe monasteries. |
