Description The paper deals with the appropriateness of the communicative approach in foreign language teaching to learners with specific learning difficulties. After the introduction into the current conception of the communicative competence and its evaluation the author discusses the methods of foreign language instruction recommended for teaching learners with specific learning difficulties. These methods differ from the communicative approach especially by the use of mother tongue in language teaching and explicit grammar instruction. Multisensory approach, the accommodation of different learning styles and the development of learner strategies are broadly recommended, too.
