Description Motherhood is perceived more as a result of a free choice than an inevitable destiny. Women can and have to choose if, when and how they become mothers. However, full control over reproduction is an illusion. Women have to consider a lot of factors beyond their control, beside individual desire to have a child also socially and culturally defined conditions of motherhood and biological limits of reproduction. An effort to fulfill the conditions of good motherhood leads to prolonging the period of childlessness. Our research compares the experience of two groups of women in the situation, when their desire to have a child was not consistent with the other conditions of motherhood. The first research is focused on women who delayed motherhood because of an absence of a partnership, the second research deals with women who suffer from infertility. The paper challenges the following question: How the norm of good motherhood is defined and redefined when its fulfilling is not possible?
