Description Patterns of invasions by alien plant species in plant communities, habitats and large areas are reviewed. Emphasis is given on the difference between the level of invasion, i.e. actual number or proportion of alien species, which is dependent on habitat properties and propagule pressure, and invasibility, which is dependent on habitat properties only. Differences in the level of invasion between islands and mainlands, New World and Old World, temperate and tropical regions and low and high altitudes are discussed. Then the level of invasion and invasibility of the main European vegetation types are compared, based on the recent studies in the Czech Republic, Catalonia and Great Britain. Finally the relationships between native species richness and invasibility of plant communities are discussed.
