Description An interdisciplinary monograph dedicated to the most representative site of the Upper Gravettian (Willendorf-Kostenki) chronological stage in the Czech Republic. The first part of the book summarizes geographic location, history of research in its three main stages (J. Folprecht, B. Klíma, J. Svoboda), geological and stratigraphic position, radiocarbon dating (21-23 tis. let BP) placing the site just before the Last Glacial Maximum, spatial distribution of the settlement structures, hearths, pits, and artifact distribution. The second part of the book is dedicated to lithic raw materials, industries, use-wear analysis of their surfaces, ochre (including the figurine of the Petřkovice Venus which has been carved of a ochre piece), fragments of coal, baked clay, vegetational and animal remains. The third part of the book follows chronology and distribution of the Upper Gravettian and the typical shouldered points across Europe, the distribution of female figurines across Paleolithic Eurasia and their recent etnological analogies.
