Description | Spoken academic discourse understood as an interaction between speakers in an academic environment can be characterized, similarly to other genres of spoken English, by a frequent use of what are mostly called discourse markers (DMs), such as well and now. The present paper, while investigating their distribution and pragmatic functions in two different corpora of spoken English, LLC and MICASE, attempts to contribute to the study of discourse markers by drawing attention to some current trends in their use as reflected in the structure of spoken discourse. |
