Description The Psychology of Disastrous Events describes, from different perspectives, one of the most devastating natural events to hit the Czech Republic in the last decade, namely the floods that struck large parts of Central Europe in 2002. At the books core is the original research study drawn up and coordinated by The Czech Academy of Sciences Institute of Psychology, in cooperation with clinical psychologists and aid workers from the Caritas Czech Republic. The book provides a summary of findings about the human experience of extreme and traumatic events, based on extensive research among flood victims from all regions of the Czech Republic. The research focuses on the victims experiences and needs, and on their opinions about the assistance they were offered. It deals with all stages of the event, including the recovery stage, and incorporates a study of the experiences of members of the humanitarian response teams. The results are based on the records of 492 semi-structured interviews with members of flooded households, and on an analysis of focus groups in which aid workers had taken part.
