Description | This dissertation presents the results of a comparative study of the intonation centre placement in English dialogues read by native English speakers and Czech speakers of English. A hypothesis has been formulated that there is a general tendency for Czech speakers to place the intonation centre on the last item of an utterance, irrespective of the appropriateness of such a placement, and that this occurrence results from the interference of the speakers’ mother tongue. It is the objective of this work to test this hypothesis. |
