Description | The present paper analyses four speeches that connect leges sumptuarii. The base is the Cato s speech against pride and profligacy of Roman matrons and rogatio of Tribun Lucius Valerius and Marcus Fundanius that propose abolition of lex Oppia de sumptuaria. The last speech is rogatio of Severus Caecina made 300 years later that connects the abolition of lex Oppia de sumptuaria with the liberalisation of manners of Roman matrons and he sees a direct parallel of luxury restriction abolition with crimen repetundarum (crime of extortion). |
