Description | Surgical therapy for rectal prolapse is controversial: transabdominal or perineal, with or without resection, with or without mesh, open or laparoscopic. Main challenges are the recurrence rate and postoperative continence and constipation. The current results of 44 robotic resection rectopexies clearly indicate that resection is not associated with a higher morbidity or recurrence. For objective discussion, a consensus is needed in terms of diagnostic tools, definition and therapy of rectal prolapse. Therefore, in the interim, the question 'which operation is best?' cannot be answered definitely. |
